ASTP Roundup 2010
05-19 From: Steve Wright <astp@comcast.net>
I am sending this email to all ASTP members for whom I have email addresses. No doubt many of you will have changed
addresses; I will follow up by other means.
I would like you to reply with a brief message - how are you, how is your health, what is new in your life.
I am in pretty good health for my age (I have CHF, COPD) & still going to the fitness center several times
a week, going out to restaurants with my lady friend & keeping busy.
05-19 From: Lloyd L. Smith <plantsmith3@aol.com>
Nice to hear from you by asking the members for their current status. This is the same Steve Wright of some years
ago who originally got together all ASTP members and created the ASTP website and activities which we all have
been grateful for.
I work everyday with the help of my secretaries and employees in my accounting practice which consists mostly of
tax preparation and management of properties. I am quite active in several plant societies which consist of Pelargonium
(Geranium) growing of them and displaying them at shows and growing for plant sales. I grow them on the roof of
my office building. I have an elevator in the building that takes me to the roof. Most of my attention is given
to them on weekends when one of my employees does most of the manual work. On days when the weather does not permit
activity on the roof one of my employees brings them into one of the rooms in my building. You may view our website
by entering (www.internationalgeraniumsociety.com).
My health is quite good. I did miss 3 weeks this tax season because of pneumonia which put me in the hospital for
5 days. My walking is not good as I need to stop for a few seconds before I get a half block.
It would be very interesting if you would let each member know the activities of other members.
05-20 From: Len Lewis <lenlewis2000@aol.com>
Glad to report that both my wife and I are in pretty good health--Fortunately my only problems are high blood pressure
and BPHP
We still enjoy the cultural and culinary diversity in South Florida and look forward every year (in preparation
now) for our summer in the Berkshires. We both love the area and the summer with the Boston Symphony.
05-19 From: C.Hulsey" <algorithms@bellsouth.net> At 86 I think I am good.Spiriva takes care of COPD
and Methotrexate works for RA. We like Caribbean cruises. Not very much golf.It is too hilly around Woodstock,
Ga.

Hi Steve I am hanging in there ok but have been fighting skin cancer on my forehead. I drove from Idaho Falls all
the way to Portland Oregon and back, with a stop over in Kennewick WA. to visit my son and intend to do it again
in July. My daughter Linda lives on the west side of Portland

Thanks to the SUI Alumni staff for providing the mailings, I have coordinated the gatherings of University of Iowa
ASTP'ers since '02. ASTP vets from New Jersey to California came back to Iowa City to share and relive memories
of their brief respite from army barracks and mess halls.
An everlasting memo of our ASTP experience on the University of Iowa campus may be found in the court yard of the
School of Engineering Building. This is a bronze plaque inscribed with the ASTP logo. The logo symbolizes The Sword
of Valor enlightened by the Lamp of Knowledge. The plaque is a simple and everlasting commemorative to those ASTP
men who gave their lives in serving their country; namely Palmer Hawley, Edward Kammrath, Nathin Masin, and George
Rodibaugh.

Steve; It is good to hear that you are doing well. I feel fortunate that I am doing well for someone in my age
bracket. We have missed you at our recent reunions. Our numbers are dwindling, there were only four of us at last
years reunion and we did not schedule one for this year. I will be interested in hearing how many replies you receive.
05-26 From: Gerald Firestone <gfirestone1@hotmail.com>
Dear Steve, It was good to hear from you. I lost my wife to Cancer 10 years ago and have have had a lovely companion
for the last 8 years. My health is good. I play tennis and golf and spend the winters in Florida. I still live
in Canton Ohio. Are you still in California? Mike Winston died last year. Do you know if there are any plans for
a reunion. It would be nice to get together again. Best Regards, Jerry

Still enjoying good health at 87 years. Go to the office most every day where I am chairman emeritus of a large
engineering firm in Fort worth. Happily married to Billie for 65 years whom I met while stationed at Camp Crowder,
MO where I was sent after leaving Iowa.

At present I am still going along. I had my 6th pacemaker installed last week. I'm good for 7 more years if I last
that long. I have COPD and a few other ailments but I'm still driving and playing bridge at the senior center at
least once a week.My wife Mary ( 60 years ) has dementia and stays at a care center in scottsdale. One of our children
take me there at least once a week. We had her our for breakfast just this past Sunday. Its very hot here this time
of year here so I stay inside most of the time. We have a summer place near Sedona that we used to go to during
the summer but don't go there much anymore. I will go up in early August for our annual homeowners mtg, but will
probably not go up more than once more this year.
