After SUI, I was in the Signal Corps at Camp Crowder, MO, briefly. (My brother, Fred, was an instructor there but left just before the ASTP crowd arrived.)

Then followed Advanced Infantry at Camp Gordon, GA. When we got to Camp Meade, MD, I had viral pneumonia and was separated from the rest of the group. When I recovered, I was sent to Leyte, P.I. as an Infantry replacement. However, they had a need for someone who could type, so I was assigned clerical type duty the rest of my Army days. I was discharged in February, 1946.

I returned to SUI in June, 1946, and finished in EE in June, 1947.

I chose a career with the Long Lines Division of AT&T starting as a management trainee. Then followed a series of moves and new jobs - Omaha, Chicago, Omaha, Kansas City, Cincinnati, Atlanta, and finally back to Chicago in 1966. It was there I started refusing moves (all involving New York or vicinity) and took the first pre-divestiture "buy-out" in September, 1982, seventeen years' ago.

We have stayed in the same home since 1966 but hire the lawn mowed and the snow shoveling since I had 4-way by-pass heart surgery in 1991.

Bernardine (Bailey) and I were married July 23, 1949 in Omaha and just recently celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary. Our oldest daughter, Gwen (John) Tobin, lives in Wheaton, IL and works for Ameritech. Our second daughter, Marcia (Tom) Detrick lives in Waukesha, WI and has a daughter and a son. Our son, Dale (Katy) lives in Mooresville, NC and has 3 daughters and one son.

Bernie worked for Du Pont for 10 years after our 3 children were grown. Bernie and I both volunteer at our local hospital one day a week, and play in several bridge groups. I also volunteer to do income taxes yearly, with the AARP program.
