I, and many others went to radio school at Truax Field, Madison,WI where we all became instructors. I quit from
boredom after about a year and went on through electronic schools at Chanute field , Il and Boca Raton, FL. before
ending up as a Radar Techician on B-29s with the 44th bomb group at Great Bend , Ks.
Then the war ended and most of us departed for civilian life. A few of my buddies stayed on with the group and
went to Japan. Between Boca Raton and Great Bend I was at Alamagordo for overseas training when the first Atomic
bomb was exploded. I was awakened just before dawn one moring by a (what seemed to be) a flash bulb going off in
the dark... That was followed by a lingering explosion that lasted for several minutes. Several days later, the
PIO put a note on the bulletin board that a powder dump in the hills had blown up.... We still talked about it
for days later.
I spent the next 20 years or so in electronic sales and distribution, then went into aviation and retired as a
corporate pilot for a financial advisor in Atlanta, GA. Spent many years as an instructor and chief pilot.
Now am retired in this small North Georgia rural community ( where my wife was born and raised )..
